This term in Reception, we will be learning about all the different things that grow around us. Every week, we will be exploring and learning different stories about Growing and what happens at each stage of something starting from a tiny seed to a mighty tree. We will be reading, the classic tale of The Enormous Turnip by Katie Daynes, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle and finally, My Butterfly Bouquet by Nicola Davies.

In reading, the children will be learning to ready words consistent with their phonic knowledge by Fred talking (sound-blending). This will then support them to read aloud simple sentences and books fluently. We will then start to build on their comprehension skills by asking the children to talk and have an opinion about what is happening the story they are reading or in a range of texts. They can then use their reading skills to write simple sentences. Each sentence will have a capital letter, finger spaces and full stops to strengthen their presentation skills in their writing. We will continue to focus on their precursive handwriting skills, where we teach ‘up from the line and off, we go’ to write each letter. Here is a handwriting document for reference.

In maths, we will be learning in depth, numbers up to 10 and going beyond. We will be learning to know one more and one less of a number, compare amounts and notice odd and even numbers. We will start to use language such as add, subtract, and equals as they will deepen their knowledge when finding the total. We are following the Mastery Number scheme from NCETM, this focuses on having a deep understanding of each number and start to explain their answers.

Our Forest school session will be on a Monday afternoon and our P.E sessions will be on a Tuesday morning. Please make sure your child comes to school wearing their P.E kit on this day and have their Forest kit in school to change into for their session.
